Charles I.D. Loof installed his first carousel at Coney Island, New York. Today only 13 of his carousels remain in operation including the one at Woodbine Mall Fantasy Fair. There is a 103-year-old hidden gem at the Woodbine Fantasy Fair. The Charles I.D. Looff carousel, built in 1911, is one of only 13 still in use in the world.
Diverse stories from around the world will be featured at the second annual Toronto Black Film Festival. At a Jan. 21 press conference at the Carlton Cinema, which will host the majority of films during the Feb. 11-16 run of the festival, founder and director Fabienne Colas announced the lineup of films.
Food choices at Humber for those unable to consume gluten have improved as the college’s catering service strives to accommodate various diets. Jose Juardo, food service director for Chartwells catering firm at Humber, said campus staff are able to adapt to dietary needs. “We provide the training necessary to all the front-of-house staff to have the knowledge to provide the service,” Juardo says.
Music, art and fashion are coming to the Humber North campus LinX student pub this week to celebrate Black History Month. Adedoyin Osholowu, president of the Afro Caribbean Students’ Association, wanted to create an event that was both fun and educational. “I felt like there was nothing really for the students that was not so formal… It’s not just about the educational aspect, it’s also about us in the community learning about the more contemporary part of it.”.

But Toronto’s major ice storm of last month was not just a pretty winter wonderland – it was also a destructive force, including at the Humber North campus Arboretum.
The reasons some Humber students drop out are written on the walls. An ad campaign featured at the college’s campuses suggests 29 per cent of students who don’t finish their programs drop out for financial reasons. Jane Leaver, the Annual Giving Officer at Humber, said these ads are part of the Humber Gives campaign and feature real students.
Notes on Blindness is a short film that uses original audio recordings and re-enactment to tell the story of John Hull’s descent into blindness at age 40. Hull, a writer and theologian kept an audio diary for the first three years following his going completely blind. This is the first time that Hull’s recordings have been made public.
